Maps & Networks Research

My idea

A laser cut out of a brain with multiple buttons that connect to different parts of the brain that express emotions, trauma, love, happiness, and all the emotions.
A video will play on the loop below of a person feeling these states, and these can be changed when you press a certain button for a feeling.

For my idea, I want to create a visual interactive installation based on the brain and the connections in the brain that make us react in different ways or respond to our certain emotions based on our experiences or us in that current state of mind. I want to create a laser cut of a brain with multiple buttons that interact with the video or allow the viewer in the audience to feel what the person in the video is feeling.

There will be multiple buttons that connect to the video and allows the person to be in control of the person expressing those states of emotions. Similar to Bandersnatch in Black Mirror where the story changes if you choose a different path or answer. However, with my project, the audience still chooses and watches how the person's emotions can change from one to another since we can't choose or pick our emotions in reality.

Technical skills

For this project, I’m going to find collaborators to help me creating coding that links to the film underneath the button so it allows my audience to interact with the work.
As I’m not an engineer or a coder, I have a family member that is an engineer that I can collaborate with to help me code the buttons to the film like Black Mirror.

Film

The film of the character expressing emotions will be in a blank space which makes the emotions and feelings of the characters more powerful to the character and the audience

How this relates to maps & networks

This relates to maps and networks because it is based on our brain and how we respond to how we feel. As the brain is a network itself, I will do more research on emotions and how our brain reacts to trauma, experiences and falling in love.
This also gives my audience a chance to feel something else that they are not feeling by watching the film.

Self Management

The first two weeks of Nov - Filming
3rd week - Finding ways to code the buttons to the screen like a remote control
4th week - Finalising the installation and seeing how it interacts with the buttons as a test run
5th weekend towards the end of Nov - Do more test runs

Conclusion

In conclusion, this work is a fully interactive piece that connects with the audience whilst also giving them a chance to pick a certain feeling or part of the brain and being able to connect with the character from the film.
